It’s all too common for women to feel self-conscious if their breasts are too small or not shaped in a way that they find attractive. As a result, many seek breast augmentation to increase their breasts’ size and improve their shape to restore a more aesthetically pleasing look.

What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a widely popular cosmetic surgery that uses implants to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It involves adding a silicone or saline implant beneath the breast’s tissue or muscle to improve the breast profile.
Whether you aim to attain more symmetrical or balanced breasts or enhance your curves in swimwear or everyday clothing, breast augmentation can dramatically improve your bustline.
What Can Breast Augmentation Accomplish?
Breast augmentation is performed for women:
- Who are dissatisfied with their natural breast size
- Whose breasts are disproportionate to their body
- Who want to create more significant curves
- Who experience noticeable breast asymmetry
- Who experienced significant volume loss after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
If you identify with any of the above qualities, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation.
Ideal candidates are:
- In good health
- Have good skin elasticity
- Those with realistic expectations of the procedure’s results
- Not breastfeeding
During your consultation, Dr. Tolomeo will conduct an in-depth evaluation to determine your candidacy. He will discuss your implant, incision, and placement options and help you develop a custom surgical plan that will most likely produce the best possible results based on your needs and goals.

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?
Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure, usually using general anesthesia or IV sedation for your safety, comfort, and convenience. This procedure usually takes between one and two hours.
Breast Implant Options
Breast implants are highly customizable and available in many sizes, shapes, and filling materials. You will choose from the following options:
- Silicone implants (silicone shell filled with cohesive silicone gel)
- Saline implants (silicone shell filled with sterile saline)
Breast Augmentation Incisions
Breast augmentation involves making small incisions in inconspicuous areas on the breast to minimize scarring. There are three possible incision techniques, namely:
- Periareolar (along the lower half of the areola)
- Inframammary (below the curve of the breast)
- Transaxillary (the fold of the underarm)
Your incision and placement options depend on several factors, including anatomical indicators, breast implants, and unique needs.
Breast Augmentation Placement
After the incision, a pocket is created to insert the breast implant for augmentation. This pocket will be made in one of the following locations.
- Submuscular/ subpectoral (beneath the breast tissue and muscle)
- Subglandular (beneath the breast tissue but above the muscle)
While every patient is unique and benefits from a personalized approach, Dr. Tolomeo usually prefers silicone implants placed in the subpectoral position with the inframammary fold incision. This combination tends to provide very natural-looking results and allows for a variety of implant sizes.
Can Breast Augmentation Be Combined With Other Cosmetic Surgeries?
Breast augmentation is commonly performed alongside a breast lift for women who desire larger breasts but also experience moderate to significant breast ptosis (sagging). A breast lift with augmentation is often selected following pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What Is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like?
Although recovery time is required following breast augmentation surgery, it won’t be long before you start feeling like yourself again.
During the initial 24 to 48 hours, you can expect to feel moderate pain, soreness, sensitivity, and tightness in the breasts. These are typical side effects of the surgery that can be managed effectively with prescription and over-the-counter medications.
By the end of the first week, you’ll experience mild discomfort, and your implants will start to settle into position. Any swelling, sensitivity, and bruising will diminish over the next few weeks, and results will continue to improve even further as healing progresses.
You can resume your regular, non-strenuous routines about five to seven days after the procedure, and many patients fully recover within four to six weeks. Still, it’s essential to restrain from heavy lifting or strenuous work that could compromise your healing journey and results.
For optimal results and minimal post-operative risks, patients are advised to follow all post-operative instructions and attend the recommended follow-up appointments.
